Best Time to Trade Gold (XAU/USD) in India: IST Session Guide
By Advait, founder of Trade with Advait · Updated 29 Sep 2026
Gold (XAU/USD) trades almost 24 hours a day, five days a week. But not every hour is equally good to trade. For someone sitting in India, knowing which IST hours actually matter — and which are just noise — saves you from bad entries and overnight surprises.
Why timing matters for gold
Gold's price is driven by the US Dollar, US interest rate expectations, and global risk sentiment. That means the biggest, cleanest moves in gold usually happen when US and European markets are active, not when only Asian markets are open. Trading gold during a quiet session often just means wider spreads and choppy, directionless candles.
The four sessions, in IST
- Sydney session: ~3:30 AM – 12:30 PM IST. Quiet. Thin liquidity, wider spreads. Mostly ignorable for gold unless there is Australia/China data.
- Tokyo session: ~5:30 AM – 2:30 PM IST. Slightly more activity, especially around Japanese and Chinese data, but still not gold's main session.
- London session: ~12:30 PM – 9:30 PM IST. This is where gold really starts moving. European economic data and early positioning ahead of the US session both add volume.
- New York session: ~6:30 PM – 3:30 AM IST. The most important session for gold. US data (CPI, NFP, Fed decisions) is released here, and it is the session most likely to produce the day's biggest range.
The best window: the London–New York overlap
The single best time to trade gold from India is the London–New York overlap, roughly 6:30 PM to 9:30/10:30 PM IST. Both major markets are open together, liquidity is at its highest, and spreads are typically at their tightest. Most of gold's cleanest trending moves of the day happen in this window.
What to watch out for
- US data releases (CPI, NFP, FOMC, Fed speeches): these land in the New York session (often 6:00 PM or 7:30 PM IST for standard releases) and can cause sharp, fast spikes in both directions. Many traders prefer to wait for the initial spike to settle before entering, rather than trade the first candle.
- Very early Indian morning (before ~11 AM IST): this falls in the quiet Sydney/early Tokyo window. Spreads are wider and moves are smaller — generally not the best time for gold specifically (unlike some Asian-pair forex trades).
- Weekend gaps: gold closes Friday night and reopens Sunday night IST. A weekend news event can cause a gap at the Sunday open — be cautious with positions carried over the weekend.
A simple routine for Indian gold traders
- Check the economic calendar every morning for the day's high-impact US/EU events and note their IST time.
- Do your main analysis and planning during the day, but look to execute in the London or London–New York overlap window.
- Avoid placing large fresh trades in the minute right before or after a major news release — let the initial volatility settle first.
- Always use a stop loss and size your position for gold's typical volatility, not for a forex major pair.
Where this fits into a bigger plan
Session timing is only one part of a trading plan. It works best combined with a clear technical approach (trend, structure, volatility) and firm risk rules — not as a signal on its own.
