US Jobs Miss Big: +29K vs 90K Expected — What It Means for Gold and Forex
By Advait, founder of Trade with Advait · 04 Oct 2026
What actually happened
Friday's US Nonfarm Payrolls report (for September) landed well short of expectations: just +29K jobs added against a forecast of +90K, with August's reading also revised down to +133K from +162K. The unemployment rate ticked up to 4.2% versus 4.1% expected, and wage growth cooled too — average hourly earnings rose only 0.1% month-over-month against a 0.3% forecast. Private payrolls told the same story, adding +46K versus +85K expected. Coverage from ForexLive summed it up as "a soft report almost across the board," noting it effectively closes the debate on any near-term rate hike, barring a surprise jump in inflation data.
Why Gold didn't just rally on a weak jobs number
A miss this size is normally read as Dollar-negative and rate-cut-friendly, which is often good for Gold. But that's not quite how the day played out. Treasury yields initially dropped right after the release, then reversed higher through the session, with the 10-year climbing back above 5.29%. Spot Gold actually closed down for the day, falling over $34 as the later rise in yields increased the opportunity cost of holding a metal that pays no interest. The Dollar itself did weaken against most majors (euro, sterling, Aussie), just not against everything, and not in Gold.
This is a useful reminder of the same lesson we flagged after the RBA's rate hike in September: the "obvious" reaction to a headline number and the market's actual price action over the full session can diverge quite a bit. A single data point rarely tells the whole story by itself.
How this generally feeds into Gold and USD pairs
Under the kind of 8-factor framework we use at Trade with Advait, a day like this isn't treated as a reason to chase the first move. A weak jobs report often firms up expectations of easier policy ahead, which can be a tailwind for Gold over time — but as today showed, yields and risk sentiment can just as easily pull the other way within the same session. What tends to matter more is whether the broader trend on Gold and the Dollar Index actually shifts over the following days, and whether volatility (tracked via ATR) has genuinely expanded or is just a one-day spike that fades. Days around big data releases are exactly when a wider stop or simply waiting for structure to confirm is usually preferred over reacting to the headline number alone.
The bigger picture
A soft jobs report like this could be the start of a bigger shift in how the market prices future Fed moves, or it could end up being one noisy data point that gets revised again next month — nobody can say for certain in the moment. That uncertainty is exactly why we lean on pre-defined rules for trend, volatility and structure rather than trading off any single headline, however dramatic it looks.
